Learning disability support programme announced for North-East
The North-east public is being invited to help shape the future of learning disability support. Aberdeenshire Council is encouraging local residents to have their say on the ongoing support of people with learning disabilities.
The proposed Adult Learning Disability Joint Commissioning Framework has been developed by the Aberdeenshire Learning Disability Partnership which includes representatives from the council’s Housing and Social Work Service.
The framework will also support the council to deliver the aims of the new Scottish Government strategy for people with learning disabilities.
This will be launched on May 29.
In Aberdeenshire there are around 1,300 adults with learning disabilities and the ten-year framework covers all of the resources available in the area and how these can be developed to achieve better outcomes for people.
‘The same as you’ was a review carried out in 2000 by the Scottish Government which said that people with learning disabilities in Scotland have the right to contribute and be included in society.
The policy said people should also have a voice and have access to support, alongside their families, to live the life of their choosing.
Although the experience of people with learning disabilities has improved since the review, many continue to be among the most vulnerable and socially excluded in society.
The framework has been developed in collaboration with people with learning disabilities and their families in Aberdeenshire to ensure that services meet people’s needs and offer safe, personalised care in future.
Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Social Work and Housing Committee, Councillor Karen Clark, said: “In Aberdeenshire many projects and services provide access to varied and meaningful opportunities for adults with learning disabilities.”
