Whim Hall care home in West Linton improvements sought

A Scottish Borders care home threatened with closure three years ago has again been criticised by inspectors.

A catalogue of failings was recorded at Whim Hall Nursing Home during an unannounced two-day visit in October.

The findings, published this week, make a string of requirements and recommendations for improvement.

Guardian Care Homes said it was disappointed but the home but was working to address all the issues.

Three years ago Whim Hall was threatened with closure because of persistent problems.

Last year the Mental Welfare Commission demanded improvements and a few months ago there was an official complaint.

Now the Care Inspectorate has judged the West Linton care home weak in the quality of all four scoring categories – care and support, environment, staffing and management and leadership.

Regulation breaches and bad practice included the home’s only lift being out-of-order for two months, a dangerous driveway, dirty toilets and a broken heater.

There was also a lack of training for carers.

Owners Guardian Care Homes were advertising care categories which were not available and criminal checks were not completed before staff were employed.

The home was also criticised for its lack of activities with one resident left in bed all day with just the radio on – and no activities for months.

Guardian Care Homes said the 44-bed home was currently being refurbished and it was working to tackle the issues raised.
