Minister calls for Remploy reprieve
THE Scottish Government has called for the closure of factories that employ disabled workers to be suspended.
Enterprise minister Fergus Ewing made the call following talks with Remploy workers, who staged a demonstration at Holyrood yesterday and a meeting with UK minister for disabled people, Esther McVey.
The UK government announced in March that it was ending support for Remploy, with a factory in Wishaw already closed. Remploy sites at Aberdeen and Edinburgh are due to close this week.
Mr Ewing called for action to save factories at Springburn in Glasgow, along with sites in Dundee, Clydebank, Stirling, Cowdenbeath and Leven. He said: “The continuation of work for Remploy staff has been a priority for the Scottish Government.”
