‘Below standard’ report delays sentencing of killer Jay Soso

Sentencing of an Edinburgh man who raped and killed a pensioner has been delayed after a judge criticised a social work report.

Lady Dorrian continued the case until next month so better background material could be produced.

She said the report on Jay Soso, 20, was “well below the standard” expected by the court.

Soso, from the Tollcross area of the city, attacked Marie Reid in her home in Easter Drylaw Way in November 2010.

The court heard that his 63-year-old victim had treated him like a grandson.

Mrs Reid lay dead in her sheltered home for up to four days before her body was discovered.

Soso – who was 18 at the time of the killing – was initially charged with murder, but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of culpable homicide.
