UWS names new head of social sciences
The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has announced the key appointment of Professor Robert Pyper as Head of the University’s School of Social Sciences and Professor of Government and Public Policy.
Professor Pyper, 51, who took up the post on 1 September 2011, has 30 years’ experience of working in the UK higher education sector and joined UWS from Glasgow Caledonian University, where he was Head of the Department of Social Sciences.
Professor Pyper held a number of important positions at Glasgow Caledonian University including Professor of Government and Public Management, Head of the Division of Public Policy and Head of the Department of Social Sciences.
The author and co-author of 9 books, 22 book chapters and 35 journal articles, on topics including UK governance, the British civil service, devolution, and public services modernisation, Professor Pyper is perfectly placed to drive forward the University’s School of Social Sciences.
Professor Pyper, who is an elected member of the Academy of Social Sciences, has extensive experience in a range of academic research networks, including the Political Studies Association of the UK, the Study of Parliament Group, and the Public Management and Policy Association.
The School of Social Sciences combines expertise in the core social science disciplines of psychology, social policy, sociology and political science with a strong tradition of professional education and research in social work, social policy, careers guidance, criminal justice and police studies, substance use and related health services.
