Facebook care home campaign builds momentum

A Facebook campaign to save Fife’s council-run residential care homes has gathered the support of more than 900 people.

The Save Our Care Homes page was set up in response to Fife Council’s announcement that seven of its 10 homes could be privatised.

The site accuses the council of making “short cuts to save money” and most of those posting messages are against in-house care services being privatised.

However one user criticised the message board, stating, “It’s not about care homes, it’s about slagging off Fife Council.”

Another user highlighted the hard work of social care staff during the big freeze, saying, “Staff working within these homes have battled in for days through the snow, walking miles to keep the service going and I think they are fantastic for doing so — true dedication.”

Meanwhile, councillor Kay Morrison posted on the site, “Please keep writing to us councillors, remembering that Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline have been promised new council-run residential care establishments.

“Glenrothes and other parts of Fife have been offered only a ‘consultation.’ Why was that needed nowhere else? Elderly people in Glenrothes are entitled to the same degree of certainty and consideration, surely?”
