Former SSSC convenor named as new rector of UHI
The chairman of NHS Highland is taking on a new role as rector of the prospective University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI).
Garry Coutts has been elected as the successor to Dr Val MacIver, who recently stepped down after six years in the post.
His appointment comes as UHI awaits a decision on whether its application for full university status should be approved.
A formal government consultation exercise, inviting opinion on the need for and benefits of a university in the region, ends on November 22.
Mr Coutts, from Beauly, will play a key role in the transition from higher education institution to full university status.
The role of rector is voluntary and mainly ambassadorial. It also involves chairing the UHI Foundation community link group.
Mr Coutts, a former Highland councillor, has been at the helm of NHS Highland since 2004.
His numerous public roles include being convener of the Scottish Social Services Council and a member of the Care Commission.
Mr Coutts said Dr MacIver, who was made an OBE for services to education, would be a hard act to follow. He added: “The foundation has played a critical role in the campaign to achieve a university for the Highlands and islands, bringing together academic, community, cultural and business interests as a united voice.
“If, as I sincerely hope, we see UHI gain full university status in the coming year, I hope I can help facilitate a successful transition so the foundation continues to have a meaningful role.”
UHI principal James Fraser said: “We are delighted that Garry has been elected to serve a three-year term as our rector. He will bring skill, great enthusiasm and commitment to the job.
“One of his main tasks will be to chair the UHI Foundation which is a vital link between UHI and the communities we serve. “The foundation not only connects UHI with its communities, but also acts as a guardian of the UHI constitution.”
