Social Care success at Kilmarnock College

One hundred Kilmarnock College students were recently presented with certificates at an awards ceremony held within the College, to celebrate the successful completion of their Health and Social Care courses.

The high-flying students have not only gained a new qualification; the majority of them have now secured places on university courses or gained employment in the social care sector.

Students from Steps to Care, NC Social Care, Pre-Nursing, HNC Health Care and HNC Social Care classes all collected certificates, which recognised their success and commitment to their studies. A special mention was also made for the day release and evening class students who completed courses while continuing to work in the care and health industries, so were unable to collect their certificates in person.

The celebratory event marked the end of an incredibly successful year for Health and Social Care students at Kilmarnock College. Forty five of the students will now progress to university, where 35 will begin their degree in Nursing and 10 will begin working towards degrees in Social Work. In addition, over half of the full-time Health and Social Care students have already secured employment in the industry, many with the organisations they worked with on their placement during their college course.

Minnie Ker, Curriculum Manager for Health and Social Care at Kilmarnock College, presented the students with their awards. Minnie commented: “I am absolutely delighted to hear how successful Health and Social Care students at Kilmarnock College have been. Whether they are going on to university, entering the workplace or coming back next year to further their skills, they have all worked incredibly hard and deserve every success in future.”

“The fact that so many of our students are progressing onto degree level study, or have found employment, is a clear indicator that the courses offered at Kilmarnock College are highly respected by academics and the industry alike. I am sure that next year’s students will find that the opportunities and teaching here at Kilmarnock College inspire them to similar success.”

The Health and Social Care courses offered at Kilmarnock College cover areas including the theory of social care, social policies, and understanding the behaviour of patients. These courses are available on a full-time, part-time or day release basis. Legislation also states that all care workers employed within the social care sector must be registered with the Scottish Social Services Council. To achieve this registration employees must have, or be working towards, a registered qualification such as the HNC which can be gained at Kilmarnock College.
