Final design of £9.6m care centre approved by Angus Council

THE final design for a care centre and supported housing complex at Carnoustie has been unanimously approved by Angus Council.

Work on the £9.6million project, which has been given priority status, is expected to begin in March 2011 and be completed by March 2013.

It includes an eight-bed, high-dependency residential care centre, an eight-bed residential respite unit and a 12-place, day-care centre suitable for the provision of specialist dementia day care. There will also be office space for social work and health staff.

The development, to be built on site of the former Kinloch Primary School, in Kinloch Street, will replace Camus House.

A total of 28 single-storey supported units for elderly people and those with assisted living needs will also be constructed.

Alison Andrews, convener of social work and health, said: “The current care facility at Camus House is coming to the end of its useful life and the building doesn’t lend itself to adaptation.

“There is still enough land left over for Carnoustie Centre Action Group to develop a community centre.

“For Carnoustie, the result of this project will be more and better accommodation and care for older people.”

Carnoustie councillor Peter Murphy added: “This centre will meet the gold standard for dementia-friendly design, and I congratulate the officers involved in ensuring that everything is being done to provide a complex that meets the necessary criteria in terms of best value.”
