Dundee care home nurse suspended over allegations
A Dundee nurse has been suspended after allegations he abused elderly patients. David Mutty, 59, worked part-time at a private nursing home in the city as well as full-time at an NHS Tayside hospital caring for dementia patients.
He was suspended last month after staff at St Columba’s nursing home, in Logie Street, complained he was aggressive and used offensive language towards a number of residents.
It was also claimed he caused alarm and distress as well as risking injury to other residents.
NHS Tayside also suspended Mr Mutty last month from his job at Liff Hospital in Dundee, where he worked four nights a week, after a police investigation.
Mr Mutty resigned from his job at St Columba’s, which cares for around 50 residents, before an internal investigation could be completed.
NHS Tayside yesterday confirmed Mr Mutty’s suspension but declined to make further comment.
A Crown Office spokeswoman said Tayside Police have reported the matter to the procurator fiscal.
She said: “We can confirm a report has been submitted by the police to the procurator fiscal in Dundee concerning a 59-year-old male, in connection with a number of incidents between January and April 2009.
“The report is currently under consideration by the procurator fiscal.”
A spokesman for St Columba’s Care Home said: “Following allegations of ill-treatment, an investigation was launched into a male member of staff.
“He was immediately suspended but resigned before an outcome had been determined.
“A police investigation is on-going and, therefore, we are unable to comment further.”
