Dundee care home move concerns as residents wait
The residents of a Dundee care home earmarked for closure are no nearer to finding out when or where they will be re-housed — almost two weeks after being told of its imminent closure (writes April Mitchinson).
Camperdown Care Home, in Garry Terrace, will shut on July 25 after it failed to implement a number of improvements as instructed by the Care Commission.
The 30 occupants — all of whom suffer from conditions such as brain trauma, spinal injuries and neurological disorders — now face massive upheaval exacerbated by the fact they will most likely be re-housed at different homes across Dundee.
A spokeswoman for the home, which is owned by Four Seasons Health Care, said, “Things haven’t really moved that much further forward
“Four Seasons are working with the local authority.
“However, the council are the ones who will put a plan together to assess residents’ needs as well as working with residents and their families to determine where the best place for them to go is following the closure.
“The local authority is really responsible for deciding where residents go in conjunction with the residents themselves.”
The closure follows a Care Commission inspection in November where Camperdown’s quality of care and support, environment, staffing and management and leadership were described as “weak”.
The mother of one resident said, “There are 30 residents there including my son and they all have to be re-housed within a 90-day period.
“It seems to me like Four Seasons have just shrugged their shoulders while the council is taking its time assessing residents.
“Our son was happy there — he was getting everything he needed and was well cared for.
“We thought he was settled for life but this upheaval is just upsetting him and us.
“We’re worried sick actually.”
A spokesperson for Dundee City Council said assessments of the individual care needs of residents were under way.
He added, “A project team from Four Seasons, social work and NHS Tayside, along with the involvement of the Care Commission, are working together to find alternative arrangements for the people currently at Camperdown Care Home.”
