Fine for care worker who wrote on patient’s face

A care worker who wrote across the face of a dementia patient with a pen has been fined £250.

Cameron Murray wrote the word “NOD” on 89-year-old Thomas McNaughton’s forehead. The 21-year-old later claimed that he was just joking around after being caught by another member of staff.

Sentencing Murray at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Sheriff Andrew Normand told him: “You now have a criminal conviction as a result of this entirely foolish and inappropriate behaviour.”

Murray, from Cambuslang, admitted assaulting Mr McNaughton by writing on him with a ball-point pen at Greencross Care Home, Tabernacle Street, Cambuslang, on July 9, 2008.

Prosecutor Mary McCrory told the court that Murray could offer no reasonable explanation for his actions and has lost his job at the specialist dementia unit as a result.
