Care Institutions Criticised Over Standards

Two private care institutions were criticised yesterday by a watchdog for failing to meet government standards.

The Care Commission said it had “considerable” concerns over the standard of care at Monroe House, a 26-bed private psychiatric hospital for adults with learning disabilities and associated mental health problems in Dundee.

The agency said it had issued 14 notices requiring the hospital to improve care standards. Some concerns had been addressed but others were still to be resolved.

It also upheld four complaints against the hospital, including one of “potential abuse” and three relating to health and welfare of patients.

A spokeswoman for Castlebeck, which runs the hospital, said: “Since the Care Commission reported its findings in March 2007 we have worked with them to address the issues raised.”

Inspectors reported “significant” concerns over Bethesda Hospice, Stornoway, but said all had been resolved.
