Review Of Hospital Parking Fees

A review of NHS hospitals charging for car parking is expected to be announced by the Scottish Government.

It is understood Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon feels visitors and staff should be protected from unnecessary or excessive charges.

Hospital authorities say the fees are important in tackling congestion.

In some hospitals visitors can be charged up to £7 a day. The review of is expected to be completed by the end of November.

In setting up a review group of hospital parking charges, ministers are responding to wide-spread complaints from both members of the public and NHS staff.

It is thought Ms Sturgeon feels the cost, particularly for lower paid staff, can be a disproportionate burden.

The health secretary also queries the blanket, board-wide application of policies, given the different circumstances that exist from hospital to hospital.
