Campaign Fails To Save Geriatric Unit

Campaigners have failed in a bid to prevent the closure of a geriatric unit in Helensburgh. Despite local opposition, it has been confirmed that the Jeannie Deans Unit is shutting.

It has been on a care and maintenance basis since the last patient was transferred to the town’s Victoria Infirmary in May.

Local MSP Jackie Baillie has hit out at the move, saying: “We are awaiting a Social Work Agency report which is due to be published in October. I had hoped that in order to ensure the best possible standard of care for older people, that the cabinet secretary would have waited until that had been released.”
