Prostitutes In Fear Following Another Killing

Prostitutes in Glasgow have been telling STV how they fear for their lives after another killing. Susan Shivers was working as a prostitute when she was stabbed three weeks ago. The 27-year-old fell ill again on Friday and died on her way to hospital.

Detectives say her death is murder. Seven other killings of city prostitutes remain unsolved. Susan was stabbed in Robertson lane in the city centre. She died on Friday 20 days later.

Although there are more officers policing this area than ever before Glasgow’s sex workers still  fear they could be next. One said: “I could walk down there tonight, you know just bang…it’s like a lucky bag isn’t it…the plain officers are but uniform aren’t interested.”

Another added: “I feel gutted, gutted sick and unsafe at the same time.”  Asked if this made her think twice about going out, she replied: “Yes.”

Susan is the ninth prostitute to be murdered in Glasgow since 1991. Only one of those cases comcerning street workers has been solved.

Before she died Susan was able to provide police with a good description of the man who attacked her. With eight unsolved prostitute murders now on their books Detectives hope that description will trigger witnesses to come forward.
