Anger As Sensory Garden Is Wrecked
A garden designed to benefit disabled people in Kirkcaldy has been destroyed by vandals. The Kirkcaldy Sensory Impairment Centre garden, which was created and maintained by volunteers for the benefit of users, was ruined as pots and brick paving were ripped up and smashed.
Fife Society for the Blind chief executive Alan Suttie has spoken of his anger at those who targeted facilities maintained for the benefit of disabled people.
“The garden is regularly used by a group of children who have multiple and complex needs who visit the centre after school,” he said.
“Not only have the vandals wrecked an important sensory element to the garden but they have left it covered in broken glass and other dangerous rubbish.
“The garden is maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers who freely give their time and expertise for the benefit of the centre and I know that this will be soul destroying for them.
“This is not the first time that our volunteers have had to come and work to restore the garden.”
Local councillor John MacKenzie said he was saddened and angered to hear about the damage.
“The centre is well respected and used and it’s dispiriting to here about such wanton destruction,” he said.
“There has been a similar continuing problem in nearby Hazel Avenue. We are making progress there but it’s a long battle.”
The damage to the garden was reported to Fife Police and it is hoped local residents with any knowledge of the incident will come forward.
