SSSC Codes Of Practice Translated Into British Sign Language
The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) Codes of Practice for Social Service Workers and Employers have been translated into British Sign Language (BSL) and are now available to order on DVD. The Codes of Practice set out the standards of conduct and practice that social service workers and employers must adhere to.
The document is free to request and the SSSC has distributed over 400,000 copies since it was published in 2002.
The translation was carried out by Glasgow-based charity Deaf Connections, one of the world’s oldest charities working with Deaf and hard of hearing people.
Deaf Connections provides literacy and numeracy training, ICT training, health information and advice, communication services, community development, clubs and youth activities throughout Scotland.
Senior care worker Irene Galloway, one of the presenters on the DVD, said: “When I knew that the Codes of Practice would be signed on a DVD, I was very happy to take part. I know that other Deaf social service workers will be pleased and will understand the Codes better because British Sign Language is our first language, not English.
“It would be great if all social care information was in BSL which would mean I would have the same access as everyone else and not miss anything important. The Codes are also valuable for me as a senior worker responsible for other Deaf staff.”
Morag Alexander, Convener of the SSSC said: “The Codes of Practice lay down the standards of professional conduct and practice that are required of social service workers and employers. It is essential that workers, employers, people who use services and carers are able to access and understand these Codes. The Codes of Practice are already available in a number of formats including Makaton symbol, Makaton sign, pictorial version, Braille, audio, large print and over 30 languages.”
