Young People Who Self-Harm Are Attention Seeking
‘see me’ have released new research revealing the stigmatising attitudes of Scottish adults towards young people who self-harm.
The research finds that 41% of adults in Scotland think young people who self-harm are attention-seeking and 34% feel they are manipulative. It also found that over half (56%) of Scottish adults would not know how to help a young person who is self-harming.
The announcement of the new research coincides with the launch of a new ‘see me’ TV ad campaign demonstrating the harmful effect stigmatising behaviour has on young people who are self-harming.
To support the new TV ad and research findings, adults who have encountered young people who self-harm as well as young people who self-harm and have experienced stigma first hand, have agreed to give interviews about the impact it has had on their lives.
