Home support charities to benefit from £1.2 million social care workforce training

Voluntary organisations across Scotland are benefitting from grants totalling more than £1.2 million which will help social service workers gain qualifications, the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) announced today.

The funding will support nearly 1200 social service workers to gain the qualifications they need to register with the SSSC. The Voluntary Sector Development Fund (VSDF) grants are being allocated to 80 charities which provide care at home and housing support services.

Welcoming the funding, Minister for Childcare and Early Years Maree Todd said: “I’m pleased we’ve been able to support charities through the Voluntary Sector Development Fund since 2003 to ensure a competent, confident, and valued social service workforce in Scotland.

“Social care is a vital public service, protecting the most vulnerable people in our society. Social service staff across the country will feel a real benefit of this investment as training will increase the quality of social care provided to service users.”

Chief Executive Lorraine Gray (pictured) said: “I’m very pleased to announce this funding today. Having a registered professional social service workforce is essential as they care for some of the most vulnerable people in society and this new funding will help hundreds of workers get the qualifications they need.”
