Barndardo’s ‘eyes and ears’ project protecting vulnerable children from exploitation

Children will be safer from the risk of sexual exploitation over the Christmas party season thanks to a year-long scheme, according to a leading charity.

Barndardo’s said it has raised awareness among thousands of night-time workers about how to look out for youngsters who may be vulnerable to abuse.

The Nightwatch project has seen staff in pubs and clubs, fast food outlets, hotels and public transport hubs given training about the dangers facing children after dark.

Barnardo’s chief executive Javed Khan said: “With more people out and about in the festive season, the signs of sexual exploitation could be more easily overlooked.

“But this project has created a vital network of eyes and ears after dark. Thousands of night-time workers now know how to look out for children and young people who can be particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation during the night.

“We want all night-time workers to be aware of the dangers and play an active role in protecting children and young people from sexual abusers.
