87-year-old man held amid murder probe over care home woman’s death

An 87-year-old man is being held on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 80s died at a care home.

Detectives are investigating what happened at Poppyfields care home in Chapman Way, Eynesbury, near St Neots in Cambridgeshire.

Officers were called to reports of “serious concern” for a man and a woman inside the property just after 5pm on Monday.

An ambulance was called but a woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while a man was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge in a stable condition.

A post-mortem examination is likely to take place on the woman later on Tuesday.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said an 87-year-old man from Eynesbury has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains at Parkside Police Station in Cambridge.

Officers “are not looking for anyone else in connection” with the incident.

A police scientific support unit van was parked outside the care home on Tuesday morning.

The care home is comprised of 34 one-bedroom flats, a listing on the website of operator Hanover Housing Association said.

It added that an on-site manager looked after the upkeep of the buildings and gardens, as well as helping residents access further help and support if needed.
