Bolton family may be handed first Slavery and Trafficking Prevention Order
A family of four could be handed the first ever Slavery and Trafficking Prevention Order after prostituting two Eastern European women.
Police rescued the two women from the control of two Hungarian brothers and their parents after executing a search warrant at the family’s address in Bolton, Greater Manchester.
Bolton Crown Court heard that elder son Ferenc Dardai, 22, had been the “prime-mover” in the seedy family empire and had beaten the Hungarian women on a daily basis whilst collecting the £150 they made each day.
His father, Ferenc Dardai Senior, 42, mother Melania Kiraly, 42, and brother Daniel Dardai, 19, had all carried out varying roles within the operation, with Dardai Snr driving the women to different towns and cities in order to meet clients.
At an earlier hearing, Dardai Snr, Dardai Jnr and Kiraly pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation within the UK after officers attended the address in Spa Road on March 27 this year.
Daniel Dardai pleaded guilty to one count of the same charge.
The court was told that the women, aged 30 and 20, had been forced to see up to five clients a day and worked “whenever the phone rang”.
Judge Peter Davies is to pass sentence on Monday.
He could deliver the first Slavery and Trafficking Prevention Order under the new Modern Slavery Bill.
The order places restrictions on individuals deemed to pose a serious risk of harm and are used to protect vulnerable potential victims.
One of the victims who had travelled to the UK from Hungary a year prior, said she had been “treated like a slave” whilst living with the Dardai family.
The court heard that she was forced to eat with separate cutlery, “so they would not catch any infection” and was only given bread, butter and salami to eat, and sometimes only once a day.
Prosecutor Mr Mark Monaghan said she was badly beaten by Dardai Jnr and his mother and was told she could not leave until she earned a certain amount of money.
Pimp Dardai Jnr set up profiles of the women on adult websites with their photos and numbers, and when clients called, he and his father would tell the women what to say and respond to any text messages.
One of the victims said Dardai Jnr had on occasions strangled her for “not smiling enough for clients” and had fainted after one beating.
She was also beaten by Kiraly.
Mr Monaghan said: “The victims were coerced into prostitution, there was violence and threats of violence. The defendants all have important roles within the family business.”
In a video interview one victim said: “They treated me like a slave.”
Mr Monaghan added: “She had to clean the house while the defendants did nothing but take drugs and go to the casino.”
He added that she was refused medical help and dropped in weight from 70kg to 47.6kg.
For Dardai Jnr, Mr Phillip Parry said his client was “sorry for the upset and pain” he had caused whilst Joseph Hart for Dardai Snr said that he had known what was going on but “didn’t want to make his sons angry”.
Virginia Hayton for Daniel Dardai said he was a man of good character who had only made “a limited amount of money”.
Wayne Jackson for Kiraly asked that her sentence be suspended, adding, “her involvement is more limited than the others”.
They will be sentenced on Monday at Bolton Crown Court.
