Police take no further action over Hampshire care home death

A woman arrested after a murder inquiry was launched into the death of a 96-year-old woman at a care home near Southampton will face no further action as police say the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Ethel Baldwin died at the Abbey House Care Home in Netley Abbey on September 13 last year. She had been admitted to the home about two years previously for palliative care.

Hampshire Police launched an inquiry into the death after they were called in by the care home’s management.

Following the results of a pathology report, detectives said they are no longer treating the death as suspicious.

A police spokesman said: “In December 2014, it was announced that following the results of a pathology report detectives from Hampshire Constabulary were no longer treating the death of Ethel Baldwin, who was known as Joyce, as suspicious.

“The 37-year-old woman who was arrested on suspicion of assault in relation to this investigation and who was bailed until May 8 2015, will face no further action.”

Abbey House Nursing Home, based in the grounds of Netley Abbey, cares for up to 48 residents with a wide range of health and social care needs.

It also provides rehabilitation services for individuals requiring short-term care.
