Minister urges sector input as Care Act feedback deadline approaches

With one week left before the DH consultation on care costs closes, Minister of State for Care and Support, Norman Lamb, is urging the sector to participate.

The consultation seeks views on changes to the way care and support is funded, through the introduction of a cap on care costs. It also asks for comments on proposals for a new system of appeals.

The consultation seeks the views from people with experience of care and support – from those with needs for care and support, and their carers, as well as the professionals who are responsible for delivering and commissioning care.

The cap protects working age and retired adults from care costs rising above £72,000.

So far, the questions around the cap on care costs for working age adults and measuring what counts towards the cap are attracting the most comments.

Mr Lamb said: “I urge you to take part in this consultation. There are many details to thrash out. We need your views, your expertise and certainly your help to make these reforms a reality.

“The Care Act 2014 is a shining example of policy and legislation developed and fine-tuned through full and frank conversations, not just with those working in or with the health and care system, but the people it exists to serve.”
