Police probe South London care home ‘injuries’

Detectives are investigating alleged injuries to three elderly residents of a care home that was shut after inspectors found it was “not safe”.

Scotland Yard confirmed officers are working with council officials to investigate the events that led to the closure of Grantley Court Nursing Home in Sutton, south London, last month.

A spokeswoman said: “On Monday 15 December an allegation was made to police concerning injuries to three former residents, two men and a woman, aged in their 80s and 90s.

“Joint police and Sutton Council investigations will seek to examine all circumstances and events around the closure of the home.”

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) issued a damning critique of levels of care at the home in November.

The report said: “The service was not safe. We found that people were at risk of neglect or inappropriate restraint and that allegations of abuse were not reported according to the home’s policy.

“People were at risk of acquiring infections because the home and equipment were not cleaned to an appropriate standard and there were not adequate systems in place to reduce the risk of infection.

“Several people did not have access to the equipment they needed to be cared for safely and some equipment was not being used safely.”

No arrests have been made and inquiries continue, the Met Police said.
