Care worker arrested amid allegations of patient assualt at nursing home
A care worker has been arrested following allegations of abuse against elderly residents at a nursing home in Trafford, Manchester.
The 30-year-old man was arrested at his house on suspicion of common assault and has been suspended from his role at the Manorhey Care Centre in the Urmston district of Trafford.
The Manchester Evening News (MEN) reported that police are investigating allegations the care worker slapped a 65-year-old male resident after a whistleblowing nurse raised concerns to management at the home.
In a further development, the whistleblower has also been suspended for not recording or reporting the abuse ‘as per policy’.
The 83-bed facility, on Stretford Road, opened in 2010 and is operated by Trafford-based New Care Projects LLP.
Speaking to the MEN, a spokeswoman for the home said: “A qualified nurse was appropriately challenged by the management team regarding her clinical conduct. This particular member of staff alleged that three separate cases of physical abuse had occurred in the home, none of which had been reported or recorded as per policy.
“One case has led to the arrest of one member of staff, who was suspended immediately.”
The home was recently inspected by the CQC after complaints patients were being locked in their bedrooms at night. However, the home was found to be meeting all safeguarding standards and had locked rooms at the request of patients.
