Hayle’s Millpond View Care Home to close
Residents of a Cornish care home are “shocked and upset” after its owners confirmed the facility is to close on 7 August due to financial difficulties.
About 45 jobs will be lost at Millpond View Care Home, in Hayle.
The owners are “working closely” with Cornwall Council social services to find new places for the 19 residents.
They admitted they had failed to provide the minimum 28 days notice of closure, but the problem was so acute they had no choice.
‘Frantically looking’
Babs Fagg, who lives at the home, which has places for up to 32 residents, said: “I’m very shocked and very upset.
“It’s my home and now I’ve lost it. I’ve got no parents, no family and really I’m out on a limb until they find me something.”
Resident Vivian Greenwood said: “We’re all upset. My daughter’s frantically looking for somewhere to put me but it’s all up in the air.”
Jan Semmens, whose 93-year-old mother lives at the home, said: “It’s just dreadful for everybody, it’s like breaking up a whole family.”
In a statement, Cornwall Council said it was told about the closure on Thursday and was “very concerned about the impact on the home’s residents” and the short notice.
It added it was working with NHS Kernow to help residents find new accommodation.
Staff from the council and NHS Kernow were at the home on Monday to assess residents’ needs.
Sarah McBride, from the authority’s adult care and support team, said: “We would never leave anyone without the care and support they need.”
The owners of the home said they had run into financial difficulties because of the high cost of nursing.
In a statement they said: “Please be assured that we together with social services and the Care Quality Commission will work together to find suitable new homes for our residents, and that our valued and dedicated staff will stay on to care for them as they are needed.”
The owners added they hoped to sell the home as a going concern and were in negotiations with a potential buyer, but that the deal was taking longer than expected and the home had to close in the meantime.
