Social worker used man’s wheelchair to shoplift
A SOCIAL worker cared for a man with learning difficulties and used his wheelchair to shoplift while on his weekly shopping trip.
Alma Padilla was arrested by police on May 1 for shoplifting and was given a caution when she put shoes in the back of a 63-year-old man’s wheelchair at Marks and Spencers at The Rock in Bury.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, needs 24-hour care as he has learning difficulties and is severely disabled.
His family says Ms Padilla continues to work at his house in Bury while an internal investigation takes place.
His sister Karen Ashworth says nothing has happened since the incident, and has criticised Social Services for continuing to employ her.
She said: “My brother cannot stand up for himself and he needs 24-hour care. I am so angry that they could take advantage of somebody that cannot take care of themselves.
“He knows she has done wrong but I don’t think he understands the full ramifications of what has happened and how it affects him.
“He is very innocent, and she has said sorry to him and as far as he is concerned it is the end of the matter, but I am very angry at how someone with a criminal record could still be working.”
Mrs Ashworth said her brother, who lives in Spring Street, was taken advantage of and worries about her when she is caring for her brother.
She added: “If she is prepared to shoplift in public, you wonder is she prepared to help herself at home when no one else is around.”
Bury Council confirmed that Ms Padilla was one of their employees, and said an investigation was continuing.
A Bury Council spokesman said: “We are carrying out an investigation into this incident, therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.
“The council has rigorous procedures in place to ensure the safety of its customers, which we will uphold at all times.”
Police have confirmed that the shoplifting offence took place on May 1.
Ms Padilla was not available for comment.
