Stansted to host national sensory conference

STANSTED will be the venue for the National Sensory Conference hosted by Essex County Council this June.

The one day, national seminar is being held at airport’s Radisson Blu hotel and this year there will be a specific focus on employment opportunities and workplace accessibility for those affected by sight and hearing loss.

The conference is a bi-annual event and in 2009 was praised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as a great success with over 200 delegates from across the country attending.

The event aims to promote the development of new and current skills and technology, build confidence and self-esteem and raise sensory awareness within the business community and commercial sector. The conference will also discuss ways in which the sensory community can be empowered to play a full role in their local economy.

Along with workshops, exhibition and networking opportunities, the conference will also play host to a number of high profile speakers such as Jane Cordell, the first deaf person to work at senior level in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and John Dickinson-Lilley, lobbyist at the Hacked Off Campaign who is currently training for a skiing wildcard to the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Russia.

Essex County Councillor John Aldridge, pictured, cabinet member for adult social care, said: “We are very pleased to be running the National Sensory Conference again this year. It is a fantastic opportunity for members of the sensory community to come together and share experiences and best practice.

“This year’s conference will be focusing on employment and how the sensory community can play a vital role within in their local economy.

“The conference will enable those within the sensory community to come together and to learn new skills to build their confidence in the workplace.”

The conference is open to anyone with an interest in employment opportunities and issues for the sensory community, from service users and third sector organisations to businesses with an interest in making the workplace accessible.
