Kent County Council sends foster letter to son in error

A father has described Kent’s social services as a “total shambles” after his son, in foster care, was sent a letter meant for him by mistake.

The 10-year-old child read the letter, which detailed complaints against social services and information about his school and foster placements.

“It has affected his behaviour to a point where his school life is breaking down,” said the father.

Kent County Council (KCC) said it sincerely apologised for the error.

The single father, who cannot be named, said his son went into foster care last year.

He said the child had good reading skills and read the letter intended for the father.
‘Damage done’

“It affected his behaviour at school so badly that they are actually looking at expelling him now,” he said.

“This mistake should never have happened.

“It doesn’t matter whether Kent County Council apologise to me or to the foster carer, it is too late

“The damage has already been done. Social services is a total shambles.”

KCC cabinet member for children’s services, Jenny Whittle, said: “We have been working closely with the family for some time and sincerely apologise for sending the letter in error.

“We are looking into how this happened to make sure it does not happen again.

“Our priority remains the welfare of the children and we will continue to work with (the father) to support him and his family.”
