Mental health nurse accused of paying patients for sexual favours

A MENTAL health nurse at a Northampton care home allegedly paid patients in cash, cigarettes and sherry for sexual favours, and dragged one resident across the floor “like a rag doll”, a panel heard.

David Ajayi denies accusations of behaving inappropriately with patients and another carer at Westwood Lodge, in Harlestone Road, Dallington, from February 2006 to April 2008, a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) panel heard.

John Lucarotti, for the NMC, read a number of witness statements from patients who were too vulnerable to attend the hearing.

Resident H’s statement said: “On four occasions while he was employed at the home, Mr Ajayi took me into the visitors’ toilets and held my breasts under my clothes.

“On one occasion he also kissed me on the lips.

“I was standing facing him and he told me to turn around so he could touch my back.”

The patient said Ajayi did not remove any of her clothes but she alleged that he performed a sex act on himself.

She added: “He asked me to turn around and grab his genitals, which I did. On this occasion he paid me £2.

“On another two occasions he gave me cigarettes and a drink of sherry.”

A second patient, known as Resident G, said: “I recall that on quite a few occasions Mr Ajayi would come up to my bedroom and touch my breasts and genitals on top of my pyjamas.

“He hugged me on a few occasions too, and when he did his hands would tend to wander.”

In total there are 17 misconduct charges against Mr Ajayi and 59 separate allegations involving eight residents and one carer.

He denies all charges relating to behaving in a sexually inappropriate manner.

He also denies using inappropriate force with Resident F in December 2007.

A statement from Resident F said: “On one occasion I was sitting with Mr Ajayi by the front door of the home.

“Without any explanation he took hold of me and dragged me outside the front door.

“He was dragging me like a rag doll.”

Mr Ajayi admitted signing for medication for Resident B which was not prescribed for administration on his shift from February to March 2007.

He also admitted that during September 2007 he failed to document that Resident A exposed her breasts to him.

He agreed that in March 2008 he failed to document that he disconnected Resident E’s feeding tube.

If found guilty of the charges, Ajayi faces being banned from nursing.

The disciplinary hearing continues.
