21-year-old in court charged with abuse of resident at care home in Bradford
A woman who was the subject of an international hunt while wanted in connection with the abuse of a 99-year-old woman at a Bradford care home has been arrested.
Hannah Parveen, 21, of Fairbank Road, Heaton, made her first appearance at Bradford Magistrates’ Court yesterday, charged with wilful neglect of a person lacking mental capacity.
She was detained at Leeds-Bradford International Airport as she returned from Pakistan on Wednesday.
She had been initially arrested in April 2009 as police investigated allegations at The Dales in Woodhall Road, Thornbury.
Magistrates yesterday were told she had now been charged with neglecting a resident, Edith Askham.
Prosecutor Lisa Beadle said the alleged incident took place in December 2008 while Parveen was employed by the care home. Mrs Askham has since died.
Miss Beadle applied to the Bench for the defendant to be remanded in custody. Parveen’s solicitor Femi Adenekan made an application for bail on her behalf.
Parveen spoke only to confirm her name, age and address. She was dressed in a full-length black garment and a black hijab.
Members of her family sat at the back of the courtroom throughout the proceedings.
Chairman of the bench Beverley Porter refused Parveen bail and remanded her in custody until a further hearing next week, which is to be held at Bradford Magistrates’ Court via a video link.
She told Parveen: “You will be allowed a further bail hearing on July 25.”
