Wigan carer in OAP abuse probe
A WIGAN care worker has been arrested on suspicion of physically abusing residents of an old folks home.
Sam Rigby, a 25-year-old employee of the Alexandra Court nursing home in Pemberton, was quizzed by officers in relation to five allegations of assault.
They include part-strangulation, putting a pensioner’s arm in a half-Nelson and smacking someone about the head. Some victims are alleged to have been left with bruising.
The Howard Street home accommodates up to 40 people suffering from old age and dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease, strokes and schizophrenia.
It was opened in 2002 by the then health minister and later Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith.
Bosses at the privately-run establishment declined to comment today and referred callers to the police in relation to the matter.
It is understood, however, that Rigby has been suspended while the investigation continues.
He is currently on police bail.
Wigan Council’s executive director for health and wellbeing Bernard Walker said: “There is an investigation taking place about this case within Wigan borough’s Multi-Agency Adult Safeguarding Procedures.
“Until that investigation is concluded it would be inappropriate to make any further comment at this moment in time.”
A police spokesman said: “Police in Wigan are investigating a report of abuse at a care home.
“It has been reported a number of residents have been assaulted.
“A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm (section 47 assault) and has been bailed until August 18 2010 pending further inquiries.
