Stourport care home’s £1m extension creates jobs

A CARE home near Stourport is opening a £1 million extension specialising in dementia care, creating 25 new jobs.

Worcestershire Care will be celebrating the official opening of Ryan’s Court at Dunley Hall on Friday at 1pm.

Monica McGlynn, care provider, said: “The design of Ryan’s Court is pioneering the standard of care offered to people with dementia.

“Every detail in the home is specifically designed to help provide the highest level of care possible.“ The interior of Ryan’s Court has been sectioned into four quadrants, each having its own colour scheme and signposted, Nautical Way, Daffodil Street, Allotment Corner and The West End.

Lizzie Flood, regional manager, said: “The quadrant concept is specifically designed to help enhance orientation, with each area having objects of reference to help people with dementia maintain their independence.”

Worcestershire Care says it is working with Worcestershire County Council to reform how people with dementia are cared for.

Residents are encouraged to carry out daily tasks, including laying tables, hanging out washing and making tea.

The aim is to help residents maintain a level of independence and involve them in the daily running of the home.

Activities include a gardening club, music classes and exercise lessons.

The interior design concept of Ryan’s Court has led to two award nominations – Most Innovative Workforce Development Practice In A Specialist Environment awarded by Skills For Care and the Skills for Care Accolades 2010, taking place in November.
