New milestones set out for adults with autism

A plan of action to help adults with autism live independently in society has been set out by care services minister Phil Hope.

According to the minister, the first year of the government’s Autism Strategy will focus on helping people find jobs, while also creating awareness among the general public.

Training for front-line health and social care staff and the publication of statutory guidance will also play a key part of this year’s strategy focus.

Mr Hope said: “I am determined to deliver real change for people with autism who often find themselves excluded from society because of poor understanding about their condition. The United Nations World Autism Awareness day helps challenge misconceptions about autism everywhere.”

He added: “Supporting people to live independent lives, find work and provide for themselves, allows them to play a part in society and breaks down the stigma surrounding the condition.”

Last month, the National Autistic Society said there was a woeful lack of understanding of autism in society.
