Reading University could transfer social work courses

Negotiations are under way to transfer social work programmes from the University of Reading to Thames Valley University. If the plan goes ahead, social work programmes will be delivered in Reading by Thames Valley University (TVU), after terms of agreement are ratified.

Reading University announced it would axe social work courses last year.

The university said it would stop offering social work programmes from September 2011.

Professor Rob Robson, pro-vice-chancellor for teaching and learning at the University of Reading, said: “We are delighted to be working with TVU on a plan which will enable these excellent social work programmes to continue in Reading. “

Dr Ian Tunbridge, deputy vice-chancellor at Thames Valley University, said: “The social work students will join our expanded nursing courses in Reading to create a significant centre for health and social care degree courses.”

From September 2011, it is planned for University of Reading staff associated on social work programmes to transfer to TVU.

The programmes will be taught at Thames Valley University’s Crescent Road campus in Reading.
