Children’s Charity Founder & Social Worker Dies, Aged 64
A RUNCORN man who founded an international children’s charity has died at the age of 64. Ron Newby MBE, founder and chief executive of Global Care, grew up in Runcorn as one of eight children before moving to the Midlands to study and work.
He worked in social work for more than 25 years, including senior posts in local government and the voluntary sector.
After a visit to war-torn Uganda in 1983, he formed Global Care as a child-sponsorship scheme run from his kitchen table at his Coventry home.
He was awarded an MBE in 1999 for his childcare work.
He died on Wednesday, October 16, in George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton, following a short illness, and leaves two daughters, Rachel and Esther, four grandchildren, and numerous adopted children worldwide.
