Three Rescued From Surrey Care Home Fire
Firefighters have rescued three people from a burning residential care home in Surrey and 30 people are sheltering in a nearby church.
Forty firefighters in eight fire engines were called to the three-storey building in Godalming at 1800 BST.
Two people were rescued by crews using ladders and both taken to hospital. A third person was led to safety.
Surrey fire service said 40% of the third floor was damaged by fire. The blaze is now being investigated.
When firefighters first arrived, they had to search the building for people who may have been trapped inside, a spokesman said.
Crews said the blaze had spread from the top floor to the roof.
Police said the road was closed until about 2000 BST while the fire was tackled at Allingham Court in St John’s Street.
The care home was evacuated and residents were taken to St John’s Church, a police spokesman said.
Inquiries by the police and fire service were getting under way on Tuesday night after the fire had been brought under control.
Fire crews said they were set to stay at the scene all night.
