Jailed Sex Offender’s Therapy Lie

A convicted sex offender who admitted attacking a 15-year-old girl after being allowed to end therapy early has been jailed indefinitely.

Matthew Brereton, 37, from Dunstable, Beds, must serve more than two years but will not be considered for parole until no longer a risk to children.

At Luton Crown Court he admitted 34 offences including sexual activity with a girl and downloading child porn.

The judge said he deceived those giving him therapy and it had had no effect.

Brereton was put on the sex offenders register and ordered to undergo treatment after he was caught downloading child porn in 2003.

But the community order was terminated 18 months early because he had made “good progress”.

Within months, he was looking at child porn again and during the summer of 2006 he groomed the teenage girl through a chat room by pretending to be 17.

When the girl agreed to meet him, he sexually assaulted her and took photos.

He was caught when police visited his home for a routine check because he was on the sex offenders register.

He immediately admitted his offences and said: “There is loads on my computer – it’s worse than last time.”

He admitted four offences of sexual activity with a child, one of meeting a child after sexual grooming, one of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, one of causing a child to view sexual material and 27 of making and possessing indecent images and video clips.

When some of the 11,000 images were studied police were able to trace the 15-year-old girl that timber yard worker Brereton had groomed.

Judge Michael Kay QC said: “Your community order was terminated 18 months early on the grounds you had completed the sex offenders’ programme and made ‘good progress’.

“This shows how you are able to deceive those who are experienced at handling offenders like you. That course had no effect whatsoever.”

He was told he must serve two years and 127 days before he can be considered for parole which will only be granted when it is considered he is safe to be released.

Then he will be on licence for life, on the sex offenders’ register for life and banned from using the internet indefinitely.
