Teenager charged with murder of dementia lecturer in Hampshire

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of a university lecturer.

Police were called to the home of Dr Barry Hounsome in Southcroft Road, Gosport, Hampshire, at 5.30pm on Monday.

A murder inquiry was launched after the death of the health science lecturer who died of a head injury.

Dr Hounsome, 54, carried out research into dementia and Parkinson’s disease, and previously worked for Southampton and Bangor universities.

He lived at the property with his wife Natalia, who is originally from Russia and works at Brighton and Sussex Medical School as a senior lecturer in global health economics, and their son.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: “Detectives investigating the death of a man in Southcroft Road, Gosport, have charged a teenage boy.

“Officers were called to an address shortly after 5.30pm on Monday 29 October where the body of 54-year-old Gosport man Barry Hounsome was discovered.

“A 16-year-old boy from Gosport was subsequently arrested and has now been charged with murder.

“He has been remanded in custody to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on Friday 2 November.”
