Jobseekers scuppering prospects with ‘silly mistakes’, survey warns

Jobseekers are ruining their chances of finding work by arriving late for interviews, or even lying and swearing when meeting prospective employers, a study has found.

A survey of 1,200 workers revealed that two out of five had made a “huge mistake” during an interview, with one in 12 having to walk out early.

The research by jobs site CV-Library discovered that many people do not prepare properly for an interview, and some admit to being confused about the job they are chasing.

One said he arrived for what he thought was a driving job, only to discover the vacancy was for a diver.

Another fell off a chair during an interview for a job – which she did not get.

Lee Biggins, managing director of CV-Library, said: “Interview nerves can get the best of anyone, no matter how prepared you are.

“This often results in silly mistakes being made that wouldn’t ordinarily happen in another situation. Putting plenty of practice in beforehand with friends and family is crucial, and remember to breathe, keep a calm head and rationalise your fears.”
