Resources: Autism Guides for Health and Social Care workers launched

Skills for Care and Skills for Health have published three guides aimed at helping to support adults and children on the autism spectrum. The guides have been developed with people in need of care and support and carers to help the social care and health workforce better meet the needs of people who have autism.

The Guides
  • How to be a great autistic individual employer is aimed at people with autism and their families looking to employ a personal assistant. The guide focuses on the benefits of employing a PA and best practice.
  • How to be a great personal assistant (PA) for someone with autism, takes into account the attitudes, knowledge and actions of PAs. The guide offers advice and gives examples of common differences autism could make to the usual working relationship between PAs and individual employers It also explains traits of what makes up a good PA for someone with autism.
  • How to do a great assessment for someone who has autism is aimed at social workers, community care assessors, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and other health care professionals. The guide contains helpful information on how to apply their role when working with someone with autism.

In addition to the guides, two videos featuring people with lived experience demonstrating how autism affects everybody differently have also been produced. They further include hints and tips of how to better meet the needs of people with autism.
