RGU secures second accolade for support of care leavers

Robert Gordon University (RGU) has been awarded the Buttle UK Quality Mark for a further two years for its continued work to widen access to higher education for care leavers.

Buttle UK, the largest grant-giving organisation in the country that directly supports children and families living in poverty, awards the prestigious accolade to colleges and universities which commit to support young people who have been in care, enabling them to access higher education and successfully complete their studies.

RGU was first awarded the Buttle UK Quality Mark in 2014 as an endorsement of the university’s ongoing development of a tailored advice, guidance and support service for care leavers.

In securing the accolade for a further two years, Buttle UK has recognised the university’s continued commitment to further develop and enhance the support available for care experienced young people.

Coordinated by a dedicated Care Leaver Adviser, a tailored support service has now been firmly established and is available from the point of application through to on-course study.

A key focus for RGU during 2015 will be to engage students in shaping the service and to expand and strengthen links with external partners.

RGU’s Study Skills and Access Unit Co-ordinator, James Dunphy, comments: “We are delighted to have been endorsed by Buttle UK for a further two years, reflecting the university’s continuing commitment to provide tailored support for care experienced young people.

“The university’s Care Leaver Adviser plays a central role in advising young people and professional support staff working in this area, supporting both existing and prospective students.

“Moving forward, the university is committed to working closely with key partners, including Who Cares Scotland, local authorities and students, to ensure we continue to provide effective support for young people.”
