Stirlingshire hospice delivering ‘very high standard of care’

A specialist palliative care centre in Stirlingshire has been praised by inspectors following an unannounced inspection by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS).

Inspectors said the Strathcarron Hospice in Denny was providing a very high standard of care, treatment and support to the patients and relatives, linking well with the NHS as well as other charities in the area.

Staff were also praised for the level care and comfort offered to patients and relatives.

Senior HIS Inspector, Kevin Freeman-Ferguson, said: “Our inspection found that the hospice was delivering a very high standard of care, treatment and support to patients and their relatives, by a highly dedicated team of staff. Patients we spoke with praised the quality of care they had received and staff spoke with pride about their work.

“We found there were systems in place to obtain patient feedback and all the areas inspected were clean and tidy.”

Some minor areas of improvement were advised in the introduction of risk assessments for the use of bedrails and also in patient care records with Mr Freeman-Ferguson, adding: “We did find that the hospice must make sure that bed rails are only used once a comprehensive risk assessment has been completed. On this occasion, the inspection resulted in one requirement and nine recommendations.

The hospice, which is a charitable organisation, provides care for adults with life-limiting conditions that require assessment and management of complex symptoms and specialist care.
