New e-learning package to help care managers in Wales

The Care Council for Wales has launched an e-learning package to help new and aspiring social care managers be effective in supervising staff.

The package provides practical guidance and ideas on how to carry out effective supervision and appraisal of staff working in social care.

The e-learning module, a first for the Care Council, aims to promote a culture of continuous learning in social care organisations, encouraging staff to discuss what they need to do their jobs well and provide a quality service for individuals.

The module includes video and audio case studies to help develop an understanding of performance management, supervision, appraisal and evaluation. It also takes into account individuals’ language and cultural needs.

Roberta Hayes, Director of Learning and Development, said: “All social care workers and managers, whether they are full, part-time, volunteers, apprentices or work-placement students, need supervision and appraisal.

“Effective supervision is essential in promoting a culture of learning within organisations, encouraging reflective practice and learning from experience as well as guiding the development of knowledge, skills and values.

“We are keen to provide a variety of ways for practitioners to get information on important topics like effective supervision.

“Use of the e-learning module will be evaluated and will include feedback from practitioners and ideas for making other information accessible in the same way.”

The e-learning module was produced as part of the Care Council’s work to develop innovative ways of providing information and engaging with its audiences through greater use of new technology and media.
