£8.3m state of the art care home opens in Mold
AN £8.3M state-of-the-art care home scheme has opened its doors in Mold. Llys Jasmine is believed to be the first of its kind in Wales to include such purpose-built apartments for people living with dementia.
The development is a complex of 61 apartments and two extra care bungalows for residents aged 65 and over with care and support needs.
The scheme, part funded by a £6.07m Social Housing Grant from the Welsh Government, has been developed by Wales & West Housing in partnership with Flintshire County Council, and includes 15 purpose-built apartments for people with dementia.
Key features of the development, which has been designed by architects Ainsley Gommon and built by Anwyl Construction, include 24 hour on-site care and support, a communal restaurant providing hot meals for residents and people from the local community, and hairdressing and laundry facilities.
Anne Hinchey, chief executive of Wales & West Housing, said: “I am delighted to welcome residents and would like to thank our partners, Flintshire County Council, and the Welsh Government, for helping to make this possible.
“The fantastic facilities and excellent support service will make a real difference to residents’ lives and it’s lovely to see them settling into their new home.
“This development has also supported 17 local young people to gain new skills through apprenticeships, providing work and training opportunities for local people.”
Councillor Helen Brown, Flintshire County Council’s cabinet member for Housing, added: “Extra Care Schemes are enabling older people to have a new choice of housing and are making a real difference to people’s lives. I am delighted that Llys Jasmine has now opened and hope its new residents will be happy and comfortable in their new homes.”
Cllr Christine Jones, the council’s cabinet member for social services, said: “Extra Care is such a wonderful way for our older residents to maintain their independence. We already have a successful scheme in Shotton and are pleased that this latest scheme in Mold, which will include apartments for older people with dementia, is now open.”
A similar scheme opened in Shotton in early 2009.
