Finalists announced for Scotland’s Dementia Awards

The finalists have been announced for the first ever Scotland’s Dementia Awards. The awards are a partnership between Alzheimer Scotland, NHS Education for Scotland, NHS Health Scotland and the Scottish Social Services Council.

Over 120 applications were recieved for the inaugural event and, after much deliberation from the judging panels, have narrowed this down to three shortlisted initiatives for each category.

The event will take place on Thursday 20 September 2012 at Hampden Stadium, in celebration of World Alzheimer’s Day and the keynote address will be given by the Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon.

The finalists for the six award categories

Best acute care initiative:

  •     Ward 44, Victoria Hospital – NHS Fife
  •     Older Adult Mental Health Liaison – NHS Grampian
  •     Getting to Know Me – NHS Lanarkshire

Best innovation in continuing care:

  •     Talking Mats – Talking Mats Ltd, Stirling
  •     Viewpoint Care Homes – Viewpoint Housing Association Ltd, Edinburgh
  •     Dundonald House, Ayrshire

Best community support initiative:

  •     Befrienders Highland, Inverness
  •     Facing Dementia Together Project – Alzheimer Scotland, East Renfrewshire
  •     Rovers Group – Alzheimer Scotland, South Aberdeenshire

Best dementia friendly community initiative:

  •     Motherwell Dementia Cafe – Motherwell Elderly Community Mental Health Team, NHS Lanarkshire
  •     Dundee FC Supporters’ Society, Dundee FC, Dundee
  •     Alzheimer Scotland Golf Day – Alzheimer Scotland Lothian Early Onset Support Service, Edinburgh

Best educational initiative:

  •     Bridge to Vision – Royal National Institute for the Blind
  •     Memory Joggers – Alzheimer Scotland, East Dunbartonshire
  •     Training for Dementia Champions – University of the West of Scotland

Most innovative partnership:

  •     Morison’s Solicitors, VOCAL and West Lothian Carers
  •     Royal National Institute for the Blind and Alzheimer Scotland
  •     Argyll & Bute Dementia Teams – Argyll & Bute Council, NHS Highland and Alzheimer Scotland

Scotland’s Dementia Awards will celebrate the work of both professionals and community groups who are committed helping people with dementia and their families. The awards will showcase the creativity, innovation and dedication that make a real difference to the daily lives of people with dementia and their families across Scotland when organisations, groups and teams work together.
