New elderly mental health ward opens at Vale of Leven Hospital
A BRAND new dedicated elderly mental health ward has opened, thanks to a £200,000 cash boost. The Katrine ward received its first patients on Monday at the Vale of Leven Hospital, following concern over the age gap between patients in the Christie Ward.
Now those over-65 who would have been admitted there will go to the new six-bed unit.
The Katrine ward will cater for patients with disorders such as depression and psychosis.
John Russell, head of mental health, learning disability and addiction services, said: “Despite excellent care, a number of reports by the Mental Welfare Commission highlighted their concerns about the inappropriate mix of patients within the Christie Ward.
“Now, older people with mental health problems are able to access a comprehensive range of services in designated accommodation specifically designed to meet their needs.”
Katrine will complement the existing Fruin ward for dementia patients which has been given a £60,000 upgrade.
Led by ward manager Karen Masson, staff across both units will work together in developing services provided to older people with mental health illnesses in the area.
The Katrine ward will receive patients from Cairmhor Resource Centre at Dumbarton Joint Hospital.
And this team will also provide support following discharge from the ward.
This latest development is another step forward in the Vision for The Vale, a blueprint to ensure that vital services remain in the area.
Director of the West Dunbartonshire Community Health Partnership, Keith Redpath, said: “Major improvements in mental health services have already been made and this marks another major milestone.
“NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has consistently reiterated its commitment to providing a long term and sustainable future for the Vale and the opening of this new ward is another significant piece of the jigsaw.”
