West Lothian dyslexia group is on the move

THE West Lothian branch of Dyslexia Scotland have moved to a new home in a bid to encourage more people to their meetings. The organisation, which had previously met at Dechmont Community Hall, will now hold their meetings at West Lothian College.

And their first meeting at the Livingston college, last night was also their annual general meeting after being set up last year.

In January the Courier told how Livingston man Colin Williamson and Alasdair Andrew had founded the first ever branch of Dyslexia Scotland in West Lothian.

Colin, who himself struggles with dyslexia, told his story to the Courier at the beginning of the year in order to help stop others going through the difficulties he encountered.

And he said the members had decided to move the branch to West Lothian College after being impressed by a visit to the Livingston facility.

Colin said: “We opted to move to the college for our monthly meetings as we were really impressed by it and its community ethos.

“My friend Alasdair and I talked to students in January about dyslexia and learning support and we felt moving to the college would be a good for the branch and its future development.

“The current principal Mhairi Laughlin taught me when I re-entered education in 1988 as a social care student.

“The college was my first positive experience of education.

“My time at the college laid the foundations for further study which culminated in me gaining a degree at Edinburgh University.”

The first meeting at West Lothian College took place in Room F9 of Pavilion A last night.

The speaker was Amy Westendrap from Enquire, the Scottish Advice Service for additional support for Learning, who presented on Dyslexia provision and learning support within Enquire.

Everyone is welcome to attend future meetings from sufferers of dyslexia, which affects one in ten people in Scotland, to their relatives and friends.
